What is FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling)? Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is a type of additive manufacturing process technology that enables the construction of three-dimensional objects, prototypes and products through a computer-aided or driven manufacturing process. It is used in 3-D printing or the design of solid models and prototypes in a layered or additive approach. FDM is also known as fused filament fabrication (FFF) or fused deposition method. How does FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) work? The FDM printer precisely extrudes melted plastic filament to create a part from a CAD/ CAM based design diagram, which is fed to an FDM system. The system sends design-specific commands to a controller head, which releases the melted thermoplastic accordingly. filament is then heated and extruded or deposited layer by layer until the part is complete. The molten material becomes a solid object as soon it is exposed to a cooler environment. There is typically a heated nozzle for both support material and thermoplastic material. The heated nozzle head is moved under computer control to define the printed shape. Usually the head moves in two dimensions to deposit one horizontal plane, or layer, at a time, the work or the print head is then moved vertically by a small amount to begin a new layer.
